This move aims to clarify the categorization of gold materials and strengthen responsible sourcing practices.
Following extensive consultations with industry experts, CIBJO has developed a comprehensive classification that distinguishes between gold recovered from pre-consumer manufacturing processes and post-consumer sources. The updated terminology is intended to improve identification and accountability in the gold refining and fabrication chain, ultimately reducing ambiguity for businesses and consumers alike.
CIBJO has incorporated the new definition into its official guidance documents, reinforcing its commitment to ethical and transparent trade. The initiative aligns with global efforts to standardize gold sourcing practices and prevent misleading claims related to recycled gold.
Collaboration with International Standards Bodies
The updated definition was developed in coordination with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is working on broader standards for responsibly sourced gold. CIBJO played an active role in shaping these guidelines and acknowledged ISO’s contributions to the process.
“There has been increasing confusion surrounding the various terms and classifications of re-refined gold,” said CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri. “Our new definition establishes clear and stringent criteria for recycled gold, surpassing many existing industry standards. A clearer framework is essential to prevent consumer misunderstanding, greenwashing, and inconsistencies in trade practices.”
Industry Recognition and Adoption
Key players in the jewellery sector, including major trade associations, have welcomed the revised definition as a significant step forward. Organizations such as the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) and the World Gold Council (WGC) are evaluating how to integrate its principles into their responsible sourcing frameworks. The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has already incorporated a similar classification into its updated Chain of Custody standard.
The New Definition of Recycled Gold
According to CIBJO, recycled gold falls into three categories:
-
Pre-consumer recycled gold: Gold recovered from manufacturing processes, including scraps, sweeps, and unused components.
-
Post-consumer recycled gold: Gold reclaimed from previously owned products such as jewellery, industrial materials, and electronic components.
-
A combination of both.
Notably, gold in investment forms, such as bullion bars and investment coins, is excluded from the definition unless entirely derived from recycled sources.
By implementing these refined criteria, CIBJO aims to bolster trust in recycled gold claims and promote a more responsible, sustainable gold supply chain. The jewellery and watch industries are expected to benefit from greater clarity, improved ethical sourcing, and a more transparent marketplace.
