Weighing 10.3 carats, the fancy vivid blue gem, named “The Mediterranean Blue,” is anticipated to fetch an estimated $20 million when it goes under the hammer on May 13.
This exceptional diamond is among the rarest of its kind, with fancy vivid blue diamonds over 10 carats being an extraordinary find. It has received a VS2 clarity grade from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and belongs to the Type IIb category, a classification that includes less than 0.5% of all diamonds. Its cushion-shaped modified brilliant cut enhances its deep, oceanic hue, making it a coveted addition to the auction.
Before the highly anticipated sale, the diamond will be showcased at the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation in Abu Dhabi on April 8. This marks Sotheby’s first public exhibition in Abu Dhabi since 2009, with further details expected to be revealed soon.
The journey of “The Mediterranean Blue” began in 2023 when a 31.94-carat rough diamond was unearthed from the famed Cullinan mine in South Africa. Over a year of meticulous study and six months of careful cutting and polishing transformed the raw gem into the remarkable treasure that will soon be available to collectors.
Blue diamonds of significant size and quality have consistently achieved record-breaking prices at auction, securing their status as some of the most sought-after and valuable gemstones. With its striking colour, rarity, and impressive provenance, “The Mediterranean Blue” is expected to draw considerable interest from collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
